Homework at all ages can be very beneficial if assigned appropriately.

Hey Liz,
I think its a very hot topic- which is why is might be taking people a bit longer to think about how they feel- as a teacher with no children of my own- I am still trying to put into words how I really do feel about HW.....

I wasn't quite sure what you meant about homework and our children. But after having visited you and heard your stories about parents who are asking about the amount of homework their children are getting, I know what you are talking about. In my experience as a Mom, I guess homework wasn't a really big issue. My kids seemed to be alright with doing it. (If both your parents are teachers, you haven't really got a chance to really mess up!) As a teacher, I can understand the difficulties that some parents have with the homework thing but I think that commom sense should help them to realize that homework will help their children to develop strong work habits and responsible attitudes towards school! Kids need to develop organizational skills and doing homework regularly is a great way to foster that development. Also, research has shown that revisiting topics discussed in class - at home - totally improves learning! And...that's the goal! So, kids should just get on with it and parents need to support that! As long as teachers are careful to give reasonable amounts of homework and kids are using their work time in school wisely, things should work out successfully.

I don't know what amount of homework kids get over there. Quintus is (6) and does 1,5 hours of homework everyday. It's WAY too much in my opinion

Melany, 1 1/2 hours homework per night for a 6 year old is certainly not the norm here! That is definitely not appropriate! I don't think that primary students get very much homework - if any! It's not usually until grade 4 that homework is given on a regular basis. Elizabeth? What do you say?

Balance is key when you discuss this issue. As a mom, grandmother, special ed. teacher and now private music teacher I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly of this topic. The comments that your mom made are all valid and homework is an important part of the education process. Having said that, there are so many other activities outside of school that are equally as important in the life of our children. Team sports, dance class, art clubs and music practice all help to develop the skills required to become organized, fit, intellegent, independent adults. Add to all of that the fact that so many kids having working parents with limited time and resources to help children with the homework and music practice and I am seeing a generation of children stressed out with expectations that are hard to meet.

The wise teacher will look at the objectives behind the homework assignment and whether the assignment has educational value. Review, study and independent research are all valid objectives. Is the homework due to not getting class assignments complete? If so, why is the work not being done during class time? Are there problems with the learing environment or the abilities of the student in relation to the work? I could go on, but since I have retired from the classroom scene, I am going to go have another cup of coffee.

Well that is my feeling too. That is too much homework for a 6 year old. They are overwhelmed by it

My kids aren't in school yet, but I'm not looking forward to it. Learning is good, but after they're in school for what, 5 - 6 hours each day I don't think they should have to spend another 2 or more studying. Heck, I hate having to study in the evenings after I've been in school all day!
